Wild Shadows
M

Your fingers are fragile as fish bones
Beneath thin white cotton, sticky summer
Pale sunken eyes pleading with me
A heart fluttering like the broken wings
Of a young butterfly

We used to drink red wine and laugh
Zesty, rich, spicy blood crimson
Cinnamon poppies bursting bright
Snapping sweet and beautiful like stars
Rare as kisses

Flowing ocean scarves, cool jazz
Swinging curtains of brown sugar hair
Hiding quiet dark pools of eyes
Deep silences on the elephant ivory
Calloused fingers

Now your life is a dusty memory
I scatter thick ashes to the winds
Your spirit is flitting through the forest
Cradled in the crook of the breezy rain
Wild shadows.
